Obesity is considered to be one of the lifestyle diseases. It poses threat to people all over the world. According to research, there are more than 2.2 billion people in the world whose body weight is considered unhealthy. The international group of specialists, in their article published in “The New England Journal of Medicine”, claim that as much as 1/3 of humanity struggle with obesity. The analysis involved 195 countries and dependencies, and was carried out between 1980-2015 using the latest data gathered by Global Burden of Disease. The results show that over 2.2 billion people, both adults and children, are overweight or obese. About 40% of deaths involves people with BMI indicating overweight, which means that the problem has become global.

According to data from 2015, there are 108 million children and over 600 million adults with BMI of over 30 in the world. Over 70 countries have been fighting with obesity since the 1980’s, and since then the number has doubled. The obesity usually concerns adults, however, the problem of this disease in children has significantly increased.

Out of 20 most populous countries, obesity in adolescents and children has mostly been reported in the United States. While the highest percentage of obese adults has been reported in Egypt. The highest absolute number of obese children live in China and India, and obese adults – in the United States and China.

Metabolism involves numerous complex processes which take place in living cells, and their aim is to obtain, use and store energy coming from nutrients delivered to the body.
